Laitance Removal.

At SB Screeding, we provide expert laitance removal services to ensure your liquid screed floors are prepared to the highest standard before final floor coverings are applied. Based in Devon and working across the South West — including Cornwall, Somerset, and surrounding areas — we work with builders, homeowners, and developers to deliver clean, consistent floor surfaces that last.

What Is Laitance?

Laitance is a weak, dusty surface layer that naturally forms on some types of liquid screed as they dry. It’s caused by fine particles and excess water rising to the surface during the curing process. This layer may appear smooth and dry but lacks structural integrity — and if left in place, it can compromise the performance of your finished flooring.

Because laitance is not suitable for bonding, it must be removed before applying floor finishes like tiles, vinyl, or timber to prevent issues such as lifting, cracking, or adhesive failure.

Why Is Laitance Removal Important?

Laitance removal is essential for anhydrite screeds, including products like Gypsol and Gyvlon, which are widely used in flow screed applications. These screeds are prone to forming a surface layer that inhibits the bonding of primers and adhesives. Without removal, your final floor finish may not adhere correctly, leading to expensive remedial work down the line.

By removing the laitance layer, we ensure a sound, clean surface that’s ready for primers and adhesives — creating a strong foundation for your chosen floor covering.

⚠️ Note: Cement-based liquid screeds like Cemfloor generally do not require laitance removal, as they produce minimal surface dust and offer superior bonding properties without sanding. We’ll always advise you on the best approach based on your screed type.

Our Process

We use professional sanding machinery with integrated vacuum extraction to minimise mess and disruption during the laitance removal process. Our team abrasively prepares the surface without damaging the underlying screed.

Laitance removal is typically recommended 7–10 days after screed installation, once the screed has cured but before floor finishes are applied.

Our service includes:

  • On-site screed assessment

  • Mechanical sanding with dust extraction

  • Surface dust collection and disposal

  • Optional primer application for better bonding
